"Once considered an urban problem, gang violence has spread to smaller cities, towns, and rural areas. There are more than 24,500 different youth gangs around the country, with more than 772,500 teenage and young adult members. A gang is defined as a group of people who engage in joint violent, illegal, or criminal activity. Gangs usually identify themselves with a common name and symbols. Research has estimated that teenagers who are gang members are more likely to commit serious and violent crimes and are more likely to be victims of homicide than non-gang members...Teenagers join gangs for a many reasons, including excitement and a sense of belonging. Suggestions are offered for keeping teenagers away from gangs, such as finding positive ways to spend time, avoiding gang members, and not carrying weapons." U.S. Department of Justice

"Youth gangs have developed in many countries, increasing (like the general level of juvenile delinquency) in countries with a higher economic level or with rapid social and economic change. In 1988, 622 wilding robberies were referred to New York City's family court. It is the second most common crime among youths in New York City, after crack dealing. In Los Angeles in 1990 there were some 750 gangs; in 1994 the estimate was 885 (570 Latino and 315 black). One of the biggest claim to have 10,000 members. By the year 2000 it is estimated that there will be 250,000 gang members in Los Angeles County. Gang-related robberies in 1989 were put at 1,800; murder at 570, and 800 or more in 1992." "Worldwide an estimated 200 000 homicides occur among youth 10–29 years of age each year, making it the fourth leading cause of death for people in this age group. Youth homicide rates vary dramatically between and within countries. Globally, 84% of youth homicide victims are males, and most perpetrators are males too. Between 2000-2016, rates of youth homicide decreased in most countries, although the decrease has been greater in high-income countries than in low- and middle-income countries.
For every young person killed by violence, more sustain injuries that require hospital treatment. Firearm attacks end more often in fatal injuries than assaults that involve fists, feet, knives, and blunt objects.
Sexual violence also affects a significant proportion of youth. For example, one in eight young people report sexual abuse.
Physical fighting and bullying are also common among young people. A study of 40 developing countries showed that an average of 42% of boys and 37% of girls were exposed to bullying.
Youth homicide and non-fatal violence not only contribute greatly to the global burden of premature death, injury and disability, but also have a serious, often lifelong, impact on a person's psychological and social functioning. This can affect victims' families, friends and communities. Youth violence increases the costs of health, welfare and criminal justice services; reduces productivity; decreases the value of property." WHO
