Below is a list of 15 reports by Richard Branson. These experiences are just some of the ones he recounted in his second autobiography, 'Finding My Virginity'.
1972 – Richard Branson survived a wreck on a fishing boat that went down on his honeymoon with his first wife, Kristen, in Mexico. "We decided to jump off the boat and swim to shore while the others stayed put – we were the only survivors."
1976 – The businessman took off an ultralight aircraft by mistake. “It was the first time I sat on it, I had no idea how to fly it and I accidentally took off. I was desperately pulling strings. I turned off the engine and managed to fall into the field. My instructor died in an accident the next day.”
1980 – “I tapped my toe while walking on Necker Island and suddenly fell into an open gorge. I managed to get my hand on the other side and Steve Barron managed to rescue me, pulling me up before I fell to what would be certain death on the jagged rocks below.”
1985 – The billionaire wrecked the high altitude hot air balloon capsule 'Virgin Atlantic Challenger 1'. The accident occurred when he was crossing the Atlantic Ocean. At the time, he had to be rescued at sea.
1986 – “I hit a car while driving through the Alps with my family. I hit some ice and went down a small cliff and turned the car around.”
1986 – On his first solo hot air balloon flight, the CEO of Virgin Group fell seriously, hitting the ground. For him, this was a sign of things to come.
1986 – “In my first time skydiving, there was a rope that opened the parachute and another that released it. I pulled the wrong cable by mistake. I was falling through the air before an instructor could pull my spare rope.”
1987 – “In our attempt to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon, the balloon's solar heating was too good and we went up, up, up without apparently having a way to stop it. My co-pilot Per managed to land the balloon just before the capsule imploded and we fell to our deaths.”
1987 – “In the same challenge, I lost my co-pilot when Per jumped into the Atlantic, leaving me alone in the hot air balloon that disappeared above the clouds. I was convinced I was going to die. On that memorable flight… I managed to launch the balloon into the North Sea and was rescued by helicopter.”
1989 – “I decided to make an entrance to my wedding with Joan, hanging from a helicopter in an all white suit. I fell into the shallow end of the pool by mistake, broke my legs and spent the entire wedding limping.”
1991 – Richard Branson was inside a balloon when it caught fire at an altitude of 30 feet. They managed to put out the fire, but lost half their fuel in a maneuver to get rid of the empty tanks. “We thought we were going to run out of fuel halfway across the Pacific, before the strong current winds saved us. We landed in the Arctic – successfully completing the challenge, but dropped in temperatures of minus 50 degrees at 3.000 miles from our planned destination in Los Angeles.”
2001 – The businessman almost died electrocuted. He almost missed a step on a train track loaded with 25 volts. The incident took place while he was inspecting the new commuting trains in England.
2004 – “I agreed to bungee jumping out of Victoria Falls as part of my TV show 'The Rebel Billionaire.' As I fell in the air, I cut my head off on something and came back [from the heel] with blood running down my face.”
2007 – “I jumped out of the [building] Palms Casino in Las Vegas when we announced Virgin America's new route to the city. After initially refusing to make the jump, I reconsidered and dove into the building at high speed in high winds. I crashed painfully into the buildings. Fortunately, I didn't turn, so it was my back that hit the wall instead of my head. [The knock] completely ripped the back of my pants, cut my legs and arm, and seriously injured my hand.”
2016 – “My life flashed before my eyes when I walked over the handlebars while riding Virgin Gorda. My bike disappeared over the cliff, and I escaped with a fractured jaw, severe cuts and bruises, and a shoulder injury.”
With that, the question remains: is Richard Branson addicted to adrenaline?
